What is the Certification?
The Industry's Top Credential
The Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA) has been the spray foam industry’s governing voice since 1987 — the national body, spanning contractors and manufacturers across all 50 states, that writes the technical standards and safety practices the industry is measured against and helps shape the building codes it works under. Its certification program is accredited to ISO 17024, the international standard for certifying professionals.
Every project we spray is overseen by holders of its two highest credentials — Master Installer and Project Manager — earned by passing all four levels of its exam program. Together they certify both the craft of spraying and the science behind it: building design, codes, and material selection.
Anyone can call themselves an expert. Our projects are managed by SPFA-certified installers who have passed all four SPFA exams — in writing and in the field.
- All 4 exam levels passed

Certified Master Installers Are Verified Building Science & Spray Foam Experts
01
Written Exams
It’s not easy getting certified. The highest level is a Project Manager which requires passing all four proctored exams.
These exams cover building science, chemistry, safety, and code. What this means is that anyone who passes these four exams know exactly how spray foam actually works: vapor drive, R-values, substrate compatibility, mix ratios, and how to prevent the mistakes that cause failures.
02
Field Exam
Written exams test what you know. Field exams test what you can show you know. So, an evaluator observes a real installation including equipment settings, mix ratios, foam thickness, and finish quality against SPFA’s standards.
That means this certification is not earned by simply describing good work. It’s earned by performing it, while being graded. Passing one test proves you know the material. Passing both proves you can deliver it on your building.
03
Experience
Certified Master Installers don’t just pass exams, they also have to have real world experience.
SPFA requires documented spraying experience — 500,000 board feet minimum, across varied applications — before certification is even possible. We have more than 4 million board feet of experience!
